Nokia Lights Up London With OVI Maps Campaign

March 26, 2010, by jameslacey

If you’re in London’s Covent Garden today (March 26th) or tomorrow (March 27th) from 11am until 10pm, have a look out for a ‘special’ Mini Cooper parked at the Market Place. This Mini Cooper is special because there are light projection arrows coming out of the Mini. This visual spectacular will light up the area.

Nokia has launched this installation to show people that Sat Nav no longer needs to be chained to the dashboard, thanks to Ovi Maps, free for life across a range of Nokia devices.

In addition, Nokia has set up a demonstration area to help passers by downloading Ovi Maps on to their handsets.  And if you are looking to find your way demonstrators can create printed Ovi maps for you.  There will be a famous London tour guide giving people directions and telling tourists about London.

So if you’re looking for a certain back-street in London today or tomorrow, pop down to Covent Garden’s Market Place and OVI Maps will point you in the right direction

Running with Digital Scissors

March 23, 2010, by jameslacey

With British politics gearing up for a general election in the spring, it is no wonder that all three of the major parties are ramping up their campaigns accordingly. However, in the same week that AdWeek announced the COI as Britain’s biggest advertising spender, the Tories have been slammed [again] by the active online community in their latest attempt at slander-licious Labour bashing.

For anyone unaware of the #cashgordon car crash – the communications bruisers behind Cameron’s “I’m not quite as bad as him” campaign tried to expose Unite’s power over the Labour party after their £11m generosity by launching CashGordon.

CashGordon, a minisite with a live Twitter feed of aggregated posts featuring #csashgordon as the hashtag lasted a very short amount of time before the savvy techie out there realised that the site was utterly defenseless to attackin their eagerness to cash in on the public’s disgruntled huffing and puffing about Unite’s actions over the weekend, the site had been built with absolutely no security in place.

Very quickly the tweets included mark up, allowing for big and bold messages about Cameron to be posted with all sorts of rude words in them. Then Javascript was included – allowing a pop up box to be enabled uttering nothing but the words, ‘Knickers’. Then redirects to old people porn, then old people gay porn and then – the site was taken down.

This graph by Meg Pickard gives you a pretty accurate timeline following the launch of #cashgordon

This isn’t a political bashing of one party or another, it is far more simple than that – once again a brand had forgotten that, like any conversation, if they want it to stay on track, they must moderate it in a fair and transparent manner. No one, especially political parties, should expect to be able to garner 100% positive contribution or support from their actions online or offline.

Looking at a lot of the #cashgordon tweets, so many of the attacks and undesirable messages were said/done in jest with no political affiliation to one party or another at all. Twitter users saw an opportunity to exploit a massive oversight in security and, as the community they are, chose to play with it until the opportunity shut down.

The big word for the day, Team Tory, is Consider.

Consider, consider, consider.

Before lifting a finger, imagine the worst possible outcome of a communication strategy and plan accordingly – that way you probably won’t be disappointed or exploited (but don’t count on it).
